Mechanocene

The Mechanocene is a phase of technocivilizational transition in which technological environments built by humans acquire relative operational autonomy upon material substrates and sociotechnical organization, and asymmetrically condition human possibilities of sensation, cognition, judgment, and action by datafying, arranging, and feeding back human behavior.

1. Definition

The Mechanocene does not declare that machines have come to rule human beings, nor does it attempt to name a new geological epoch in the scientific sense.

2. Difference from the Anthropocene

Where the Anthropocene attends to the direction in which human activity changes the material environment of the Earth, the Mechanocene focuses on the reverse direction: technological environments made by humans return to constitute the conditions of human existence.

This is reverse ecology.

Reverse ecology is an asymmetrical feedback structure in which the operational results of technological environments built by humans return as conditions that shape subsequent human action.

Reversal does not mean that humans and machines simply exchange positions. It means that causal effects shift from a linear human→technology direction into a recursive human→technology→human circuit.

3. Minimum conditions

Not every digital phenomenon can be called Mechanocene. At least three elements must be combined:

the environmentalization of technology
relative operational autonomy through automation, data, and feedback
asymmetrical conditioning of the conditions of subsequent human action

These minimum conditions prevent unlimited conceptual expansion.

4. The place of 2023

The popularization of generative AI is not the origin of the Mechanocene. Automation, datafication, platformization, and algorithmization had accumulated over a much longer period. The diffusion of generative AI around 2023 is better understood as a threshold event through which that long transformation became visible across society as technology began intervening in real time in human language, thought, and expression.

5. Responsibility

Recognizing relative machine autonomy does not transfer responsibility to machines.

Operational autonomy ≠ moral responsibility

The greater the capacity to design, own, operate, manage, and regulate, the greater the responsibility of human beings and institutions. A critique of anthropocentrism must therefore be distinguished from the disappearance of human responsibility.
